Over 25 percent of American soldiers that fight in wars suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Emma Seppala, research scientist at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, is studying the impact of meditation-based practices on veterans suffering from trauma. Seppala is conducting a series of seven-day courses where she teaches veterans how to meditate by controlling their breathing. Her results show that veterans who learn these breathing techniques experience improved sleep, diminished anxiety and enhanced spatial working memory.
