Dr Anup Ghosal graduated in music from Rabindra Nath school of Viswabharti University in Santiniketan, West Bengal, though he did not make his career in Rabindra Sangeet, rather he specialised in Nazrul Geeti (in which he did his phD) and light film and modern music. Renouned film maker Satyajit Ray first gave him the breakthrough in his musical films of Gupi-Bagha when first choice Kishore Kumar could not give time in 1966. And Anup Ghosal was regarded as bengal,s Kishore Kumar or poor man,s Kishore Kumar.

When Anup Ghosal recieved his filmfare award in 1982 for bangla song in the second Gupi-Bagha film, producer Sekhar Kapoor promised him a song in his next hindi film and though RD planned this song for KKji, still due to director,s urge it was given to Anup Ghosal and he excelled. The song was a big hit and probably it was the only song he sang in hindi.
