“Rihanna’s official lead single from her eighth studio album, ANTI, paid homage to her Caribbean roots. For her melody “Work,” featuring Drake, the Bajan artist pumped life into the 1998 “Sail Away” riddim, which was released by famed Reggae singer, Richie Stephens’ Pot of Gold label, Jamaica Observer reports.

In an interview with the site, Stephens recalled how he felt when he received the call from Rih’s management, stating he was “overjoyed” to learn that there was interest in the melody. “They contacted me last week Tuesday and asked if I was the producer and owner of the master and I told them yes,” he says. “They said they would appreciate if I could move fast in assisting with the clearing of the sample because they wanted to release the song. So I put them on to my publisher.”

“Work” was produced by Boi-1da, PartyNextDoor and Sevn Thomas, all of who trace their ethnicity back to Jamaica. The track also found an instantaneous home on the radio after its premiere on HOT 97. Since then, it has remained in rotation on the air waves, and there’s speculation of a video dropping soon in support of the song.

Rih and Drake were spotted in Los Angeles on set shooting what we now know to be a visual for the aforementioned track earlier this month, but there’s no word on its imminent arrival to add to the steam behind the single.” – VIBE
