  • Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi - a Jagjit Singh song
Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi - a Jagjit Singh song Sharing my cover for one of my favorite geet/nazm sung by Jagjit Singh. It is a beautiful poetry by Ibn-e-Insha. Almost every verse of this nazm was worth singing and whenever I got the opportunity to sing this nazm with friends in mehfil I always sang in its entirety. With keyboard in my hand I could do that, but here with a track I choose versus that this track was made upon. Hope you enjoy this cover. Original Singer/Composer: Jagjit Singh Poet: Ibn-e-Insha

  • O' Maajhi Re - a Kishore Kumar song
O' Maajhi Re - a Kishore Kumar song Very popular song no need for any introduction. All I now remember about this cover is that a Tamil singer friend Shrini from Muziboo days requested I should sing this song. I told him it's a beautiful song but it is very difficult and tough for me. He not only insisted but encouraged me and sent me this track. I added the water sound and fixed the end and sang over it. Hope you enjoy my cover. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Gulzar Film: Khushboo 1975

  • Rooth Na Jaana Tumse Kahoon To - a Kumar Sanu song
Rooth Na Jaana Tumse Kahoon To - a Kumar Sanu song A very popular song from 1994 movie named 1942 A Love Story. All of R.D's compositions for this film were a change from his older work. He demonstrated his genius and how well ahead he was from his times in creating music. A great song but it reflects more of the 60's music than 40's. I liked the way how accordion was played in this song and it reminded me how Sohail Rana, a Pakistani composer used to play accordion almost in exactly the same style in several of his 1960's films. Hope you enjoy this song. Original Singer: Kumar Sanu Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Jawed Akhtar Film: 1942 A Love Story

  • Honton Se Choo Lo Tum
Honton Se Choo Lo Tum This was a forgotten project. I sang it in 2012 and moved to other popular songs only to discover recently that it needs to be mixed. When young 5 years seem a long time ago but once you cross 60's, 5 years doesn't seem that long. This song has been much sought after by people who like to sing Jagjit Singh. Hope you enjoy this cover.

  • Mere Dilne Tadap Ke Jab Naam Tera Pukara
Mere Dilne Tadap Ke Jab Naam Tera Pukara Uploading two songs from film Anurodh today. Both are my favorite songs. The style of these songs seem to be a continuation of RD's music but you can feel something is different and that something is Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Hope you will not mind listening two songs and I am sure these songs will take you into that era when VCR's were so popular with Hindi films...especially in Pakistan where Indian films were not allowed in cinemas. • Ek Roz Main Tadap Kar - a Kishore Song
Ek Roz Main Tadap Kar - a Kishore Song Today I couldn't decide which one to upload as I have sung quite a number of songs recently but looking at the list this one attracted me right away. I am sure many of you must have heard this song before. A typical song from the 80's Hindi cinema when lyrics began to take a turn from ghazal'ish style to common simple lyrics. It is very much evident from this song how Anand Bakhshi wrote it. A simple song melody wise too but a bit unusual at it leaves a loose segment which every singer would take it in his own way. Hope you recognize that segment but more than that I hope you all enjoy this song. The image that I had for this song was so different than how it was pictureized. I always thought this was a song that Rishi Kapoor would have looked best. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Anand Bakhshi Film: Bemisal (1982)

  • Aah Ko Chahiye Ek Umr Asar Hone Tak - Ghazal
Aah Ko Chahiye Ek Umr Asar Hone Tak - Ghazal Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869) is my most favorite Urdu poet. His name was Asadullah Khan and had on occasions used his own name Asad instead of his signature Ghalib in his poems. Many composers and singers have produced his ghazals but I find Jagjit Singh's work to be most authentic in every aspect when it comes to Ghalib's poetry. This tune was created by Jagjit Singh and Gulzar for the famous TV Series (documentary) about Ghalib, portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah that I think was released during the late 80's. I have sung a few already but this is my latest and off course my favorite ghazal too. I hope you will enjoy. I found an adequate translation on net that I am sharing here. aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak kaun jeetaa hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak A lifetime passes before a sigh shows its effects Who would wait so long to see you fixing the tangles in your hair --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- aashiqii sabr-talab aur tamannaa betaab dil kaa kyaa rang karuun khun-e jigar hone tak Love needs patience but lust is restless What color should my heart be, till it bleeds to death ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ham ne maanaa ke taghaaful na karoge lekin khaak ho jaaeinge ham tum ko khabar hone tak I know you will not ignore me, but By the time you know of me, I would have turned to ash -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- gham-e hastii kaa Asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaj shamma har rang mein jaltii hai sahar hone tak Life is all suffering, Asad, it can be cured with death The candle burns in many colors till the morning comes

  • Haal Kya Hai Dilonka - a Kishore Kumar song
Haal Kya Hai Dilonka - a Kishore Kumar song A fun song from the 70's which was very intelligently transformed from a qawwali style melody into a film song. On the Pakistani side in this form of melody the lyrics were kept mostly spiritual but on the Indian side it was open to any subject. There were two words Shamil and Hosh which were sung in the dialect form in the original but I sang them in the pure Urdu form. For some reason I did not felt good to sing Saamil and Hoss:)) Very good lyrics by Majrooh Sahab. Hope you will enjoy this song in my voice. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Directors: Laxmikant - Pyarelal Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri Film: Anokhi Ada (1973)

  • Samne Ye Kaun Aaya - a Kishore Kumar song
Samne Ye Kaun Aaya - a Kishore Kumar song Eid Mubarak to you all my friends. Presenting a very popular song from its time but I believe it will remain popular for as long there are listeners who adore music from our Golden era. Maybe a generation or two from now such songs will be accounted under folk songs. Very lively and energetic song I could have sung in its original scale, which I tried at first too but then quickly figured I should not strain my throat and I should sing it where I can reach the highs and the modulations in the melody with some degree of ease and in my own style. The ending however is different but this track is one of the best tracks that I have viewed so far which upon a reduction in pitch still carried the good glamor a track should have for such a song. Following the end from original song was a challenge because I could not find a good original with complete ending, hence I had to improvise what I had in this track. That Pagalpun attitude presented by Kishore at the end is almost impossible for any one to replicate. I sang the song but left the end to be sung a day later. To my delight the La La La’s came out as I had wished for. I hope you enjoy this song in my cover. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. • Tujhe Kya Sunaoon Main Dilruba - a Rafi song
Tujhe Kya Sunaoon Main Dilruba - a Rafi song I think Madan Mohan was impressed by Sajjad Hussain's tune for "Ye Hawa Ye Raat Ye Chandni" created in 1952 so much that he wanted to create something in those lines too. He created this song for film Aakhri Dao in 1958 and used Rafi's voice. The Mukhda has almost the same melody but the antaras were twisted in a different way but beautifully. I don't know how the critics took this song back then but I believe since it was created by a team of masters they must have enjoyed and appreciated this song also. For folks who began listening these songs later in life must have gotten confused which song is which. I remember getting confused and mixing lyrics with each other while singing whenever either of the songs appeared in thoughts. To prepare a cover I had to listen Rafi's version carefully and tried to not infuse the other song. Whenever I sang this song at a Mehfil people who knew oldies always requested to sing the other song sung by Talat Mehmood also. I will share the Talat song next week so friends here can listen and compare the differences and yet enjoy and appreciate the efforts by these two music directors. I hop you all enjoy this one. Original Singer: Mohammad Rafi Music Director: Madan Mohan Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri Film: Aakhri Dao (1958)

  • Ye Zamin Gaa Rahi Hai
Ye Zamin Gaa Rahi Hai A lovely song from the early 80's which sounded a bit different comparing with the usual top singers from the time but was catchy and became popular. Even this time when it came to my thoughts I was not clear as to who might have been its creators. On a second thought I felt could it be RD and Anand Bakhshi as I like their work and had lots of similarities with content, excluding the voice of the singer Amit Kumar. It turned out they were its creators. For those who have heard the original can quickly figure who sang the intro part in the original. It was among one of the easiest yoodling carried out by Kishore Kumar, and hence I could dare to attempt it too:) otherwise he was an expert at shouting all kinds of crazy vocals which no one else could replicate. Hope you enjoy this song in my cover. Original Singer: Amit Kumar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Anand Bakhshi Film: Teesri Qassam (1982)

  • Jaane Kya Soch Kar Nahin Guzra
Jaane Kya Soch Kar Nahin Guzra I was expecting for a while that Sandip (sangeetkishore) would upload his version of cover for this song and I don't have something that I did not share before so thought to upload it myself first. Hope he will upload it too when he feels like. Every poet has his own style of writing poetry but most of them have written in quite a similar way, whereas Gulzar has been slightly different. Though he must have been affected by the writings of several post partition era top writers but he wrote differently than others and was successful at maintaining his own identity with film songs. Writing melody for his versus must have not been easy either but RD did full justice to his lyrics. It is quite evident that both RD and Gulzar had something in common which they shared with the public through their songs. This is one among those songs I hope you will enjoy it. • Nazar Lage Na Saathiyo-Duet with Shaniruh
Nazar Lage Na Saathiyo-Duet with Shaniruh This is a lovely fun song with lots of resemblance to Punjabi Folk style that is often seen in Bhangra music. My first time singing a duet with Shaniruh with whom I wanted to sing since long but opportunity never came until he suggested this song which I liked very much too. Though the database reveals it was sung by four singers but we decided to give it a try in our two voices. The lyrics seem casual but as the song progresses it becomes very meaningful depicting contrast between the Desi and Western cultures. I was so glad to have sung the most meaningful lines "Woh Bhi Theek To Ye Bhi Theek Hai Apna Apna Nazariya" and "Do Paatan Ke Beech Mein Yaro Sabit Bachha Na Koi". With Shaniruh's crisp voice it was an experience to have mixed my voice. He has done utmost justice at singing this song with me and I enjoyed and listened this cover many times already. Thanks Shaniruh for singing this song so beautifully and sincerely. I hope you will all enjoy it too. • Jaa Re Chal Ud Ja Re Panchi - a Lata song
Jaa Re Chal Ud Ja Re Panchi - a Lata song I don't know how this song came to my lips while I was strolling in a park. I knew my words were broken but the tune was all right so when I returned home I eagerly checked Adina's karaoke folder which she has shared with me realizing if its not there I won't be able to find it anywhere. And to my joy it was there and it took not much to sing and record. The beauty in Salil Chaudhury's tunes is that they are almost all happy in nature no matter what the lyrics are. Lata had a bit of color in her voice during the early 60's which was slightly un U.P-istic, which I am sure the producers, poets and music directors got rectified and Lata became the most wanted female singer in Hindi cinema. I have sung this song the way I had it perceived in my mind...hope you all like it too. Original Singer: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Salil Chaudhury Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri Film: Maya (1961)

  • Koi Hota Jisko Apna - a Kishore song
Koi Hota Jisko Apna - a Kishore song Every Salilda song is very thoughtfully composed and beautifully arranged and have always inspired me to sing whenever I listen his originals. But inspiration is not just restricted to listening originals. It can come from listening to covers posted by friends too. Actually for the last several years I have been mostly singing after admiring friends singing and giving it one more try even if I have covered it before. I had already covered this song in 2011 on an older track, a good one too. Within a short period of time I received this fine track but never sang on it until I listened Gopi Karu Bro's cover and got inspired to sing it again. Thank you Gopi Bro listening your cover made be come out of the "Bezaar Mood" and start singing again. I dedicate this song to you and all Kishore admirers. I grew up listening to many many singers but Kishoreda particularly. Deep in my head I feel like Kishoreda himself directing me how to sing his songs and yet allowing me to maintain my own identity. Him and I are very close friends now...especially since I became older than him two years ago...LoL. I sincerely hope you all friends will enjoy this cover. • Dil Haaye Mera Dil Tera Dil - a Kishore song
Dil Haaye Mera Dil Tera Dil - a Kishore song I had heard this song long ago but almost forgot until a friend suggested to cover this one too. The track got readily available and I just sat down, sang and recorded it. It was obviously fun to sing this song as it is a bit unusual with melody but perfectly penned by Anand Bakhshi using simple regular words but arranged them so that they sound quite authentic poetry. Unusual because the first words in each line of stanzas like Zulf, Hont, Aankh, Pyaar, Roop and Rang all end with an exclamation mark and then describing why so in the remainder of the line. So it was quite unique style and who else could have composed and sung other than my favorites RD and Kishore. Actually Anand Bakhshi, RD and Kishore is my most favorite combination. A combination that has given Hindi films lots of good songs. Hema Malini's dramatic voice has been retained in this track and it sounds so cool with it though overall it is not a HiFi track but good enough to sing on it. Hope you will like this not so currently popular song but it sure was one back in the 70's. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Anand Bakhshi Film: Paraya Dhan (1971)

  • Chaandni Raatein - Noor Jahan for film Dopatta
Chaandni Raatein - Noor Jahan for film Dopatta A song that I liked since long. This film Dopatta gained popularity in India too and the critics back then in India warned their film makers to take a clue from this film...write good stories, script and songs. Here is a translation that I found on internet. Hope you will all like this song. Chaandeni raatein, Chaandeni raatein Moonlit nights, Oh the moonlit nights Sab jug soye, hum jagein The whole world sleeps, while I am awake Taron say karain baatein Conversing with the stars Chaandeni raatein, Chaandeni raatein Moonlit nights, Oh the Moonlit nights Tukte tukte tooti jaaye aas piya na aaye re, tukte tukte Gazing, broken is my anticipation for my beloved, he hasn’t returned, Gazing Shaam savere dard anokhe uthe jiya ghabraye re, shaam sawaray Evenings and morning, unusual pains, they tremble my heart/soul, Evenings and mornings Raaton ne meri neend loot li, dil kay chain churaaye The nights have looted my sleep, stolen the peace of my heart Dukhya ankhein dhoond rahi hain wohi pyar ki ghatein Sorrowful eyes are searching for those times of love Chaandeni raatein, Chaandeni raatein Moonlit nights, Oh the Moonlit nights Pichli raat mein hum uth uth kur chupke chupke roye re, pichli raat mein Just the other night I awoke, quietly quietly weeping, just the other night Suckh ki neend mein meet hamare desh paraye soye re, Suckh ki neend mein And in another land, sleeping in peace, my beloved, sleeping in peace Dil ki dharknein tujhe pukarein, aaja balum aaayi baharein My heart beat is calling you, come to me, even spring has arrived Beth kay tanhayi mein kar len dukh sukh ki do baatein Let us sit in isolation and share some sorrows between us Chaandeni raatein, Chaandeni raatein Moonlit nights, oh the Moonlit nights Original Singer: Noor Jahan Music Director: Feroze Nizami Lyricist: Musheer Kazmi Film: Dopatta (1952)

  • Bekas Pe Karam Kijiye - a Lata Mangeshkar Naat
Bekas Pe Karam Kijiye - a Lata Mangeshkar Naat I believe this is the best Naat sung ever for any film. Naat is a poetry read or sung in praise of the Prophet Mohammad and are usually sung in a Mehfil-e-Milad. Milad's were more common among Muslim women in India and later in Pakistan. Though Milad is considered religious occasion but it really was more of a cultural occasion in India and Pakistan. I liked this Naat since the day I heard it for its beauty in Lata's recital. I also believe this is the most perfectly sung Naat...but despite being so popular it was not sung as commonly only because it was from a film. Not just Muslims but many Hindus also didn't much appreciated working for films or considered their work as work of art. Those times have changed and people have begun to realize that sure was a work of art. I found a site where you can read about this film, an original clip and a pretty decent translation. If you keep that translation in front you will enjoy this recitation more: http://mrandmrs55.com/2014/06/29/bekas-pe-karam-kijiye-lyrics-and-translation-lets-learn-urdu-hindi/ The one thing which people might not know is the use of word Gessu...meaning hair used in conjunction with the fact that the Prophet had long hairs...hence Gessuon Waale is referred to as Prophet himself. It was some tough for me to sing this female song and try to adhere to the original melody as much as I could. Remember film Mughal-e-Azam is still considered as one of the top Bollywood movie. I hope you all enjoy this recital in my voice. Original Singer: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Naushad Poet: Shakeel Badayuni Film: Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

  • Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halaat Pe - a Rafi song
Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halaat Pe - a Rafi song This has been a dream song for me since long. I call it dream because though I have started to cover some popular songs in their original keys but I could never sing this one in its original key of B-flat even in my dreams and gave up until a few days ago when I heard a tribute to Rafi by Lata which she sang two notes below in A-flat. It turned out the immense ease in her singing also took advantage of slow speed of the track. I have noticed many top artists covering songs in lower scales, like Mehdi Hassan singing Hum Pyar Mein Jalne Walon Ko two notes below and like wise Lata Ji singing two notes below Rafi in this song. Upon comparison I felt Lata sang it very carefully and beautifully but what Rafi did in the original is beyond any ones comprehension. The artistry in his singing was like a baby bird flying and showing all his acrobats. I wonder if we can ever listen to such a grand voice ever again in our life time from another artist? I have used a small starting segment from Lata's cover version, blended it with the transposed karaoke track keeping the original tempo intact. Hope friends like this humble attempt at this giant of a song. Original Singer: Rafi Music Director: Jaidev Lyricist: Sahir Ludhiyanvi Film: Hum Dono (1961)

  • Rim Jhim Gire Sawan - a Kishore Kumar song
Rim Jhim Gire Sawan - a Kishore Kumar song One more RD/Kishore combination song that I loved since long but never covered until I found this track. Some of these tracks are better than the originals clearly indicating that top quality instrumentalists and recording technicians are present today. All they need is something good to play and when they do its all enjoyment for us amateurs to sing and share with friends. I was recently watching a Canadian documentary about Monsoons in India and how it affects life in the sub-continent. • Dewana Leke Aaya Hai - A Kishore song
Dewana Leke Aaya Hai - A Kishore song Dewana is back with one more RD/Kishore classic song that has always been so close to my heart. For several days that I was sick with flu I thought I have lost interest in singing. Despite enjoying covers I just didn't feel like listening any but I promise I will listen each and every upload that I missed from friends. Yesterday this song came to thoughts and I was surprised that why I never sang this one...probably because I didn't had a track for it. Upon checking YT I found this excellent track and automatically started to hum along and decided to record. I was not even sure if my voice would help me as I have still not recovered fully but I didn't cared and kept singing. What a beautiful track to sing on. I would like to thank friends who remembered me for my absence as you all know that is very unlike me but when not well nothing seem to interest. I would also like to thank Harish Bhai for his almost daily conversation with me and inquiring about my health. Even sending me fruit baskets so I enjoy eating the fruits and recover quickly...LoL...Thanks so much Bhai I can tell you those Peers and Apples did boost my energy. I sang this song with you in mind as each and every word in it reflected my well wishes for you. I would also like to thank Sandip Brother for requesting me to sing a Kishore song as my new upload so here it for you too. I plan to upload a few more RD/Kishore songs that I love but never recorded before in coming days. Hope you all enjoy this one. Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. • Musafir Hoon Yaro - A Kishore song
Musafir Hoon Yaro - A Kishore song My first song of the year 2015. Sang and mixed yesterday and did a final tweak today to upload this lovely song. The style of lyrics the way they were written seemed as that from Anand Bakhshi but the content was different and upon a search yielded Gulzar...and rightly so. I have noticed Anand Bakhshi Ji more toward them or they as compared to Gulzar which is Me, myself. But these smart lyricists could write anything. I would also like to praise R.D.Burman who was so ahead of his times and composed melodies for so unconventional lyrics and in such a beautiful and modern style that at least no one else could make. Even his interludes could win him among the best music directors. How much I have enjoyed singing his songs I can only pray may God rest him in peace...even there up in the heavens he must be a shining star. For my SI friends this song is about a person who considers himself a traveler who has no definite address. He goes where fortune takes him and yet feels to be a proud man. Who else could have sung better than Kishore Kumar whom I admire for his authoritative role of representing a proud and yet a humble person. Hope friends enjoy this song in my voice. A close friend sent me its track and I tried to sing on it. Some friends would be very familiar with this song but those who are not would enjoy it too.
