John V. Allen Jr. earned his undergraduate degree in Music Composition and Theory from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. He received his Masters Degree in Music Composition and Theory from the same institution. John acknowledges his greatest and most important music instructor to be his father, Johnny Allen, who received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the “Theme from Shaft.” Additionally, John, as a member of the Wayne State Men’s Glee Club, the group of 28 men competed against male choirs from all over the world at the International Musical Eisteddfod, in Llangollen, Wales. They were awarded first place in this prestigious event. As Director of the Clark Conservatory of Music in Detroit, Michigan, a music school established by the gospel music legend, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, John developed the curriculum and instruction for the program and marshaled the school in to the utilization of new technologies while maintaining the original vision. As Music Director and Conductor on the Grammy Nominated “Sincerely” album by The Clark Sisters, the use of orchestral strings and horns in combination with the traditional gospel music elements launched a wave of music projects that sought to incorporate similar elements of music production. As a film composer, John composed the music for the feature film, “Love Your Mama.” As a music producer and/or arranger, John has worked with Anita Baker, Smokey Robinson, Louis Price, Thomas Whitfield, David Gough, Morning Star Choir, and a multitude of other artists.
