Biologicals and drugs. - Drugs and biologicals are covered only when of the sort that cannot be self-administered and tend to be limited to those that are administered by injection. Thus, injections will be covered even though required on an ongoing basis, such as those for pernicious anemia, arthritis, etc., provided they are administered by the physician or his nurse. However, if the injection is of the sort that is commonly self-administered, such as insulin, the drug or biological is excluded unless administered to the patient in an emergency situation, e.g., diabetic coma. Charges for the physician services may be covered though the injection itself may not be covered even.
