In the aftermath of the 2016 elections, there has been a surge of women candidates seeking office up and down the ballot nationwide. This development is not only evident in California, but Elk Grove has likewise experienced an increase in women candidates seeking elected office.

Along with Tracie Stafford who is hoping to become Elk Grove's first directly elected mayor, another early entrant in Elk Grove was Jaclyn Moreno who is seeking one of the two open seats on the Cosumnes Community Services District board of directors. Moreno was selected to be part of a series created by public radio station KQED in San Francisco (KQIE in Sacramento) called "The Long Run."
