ELDERS don't just appear out of nowhere in the 1st-century church. A long tradition of elders was already established through Israel's history. From communion with God on Mt. Sinai in Exodus 24...to playing a role as peacemakers in the communities...to serving as gatekeepers, knowing who goes in and who goes out of the community...these men were the trusted sages who understood godly wisdom and justice. Not surprisingly, the portraits of Old Testament elders look remarkably similar to those the New Testament paints.
