Director National Women’s Organisation (NVB)

1995 - 2010 Director, Bureau National Women's Movement (NGO). In this capacity:
Managed the NVB into efficient operations and effective performance and a social
institution of significance, which participates in various bodies and networks
(government, non-governmental, United Nations, Interamerican Development Bank)
and is frequently consulted by the government and various organizations on matters
of social transformation and gender development, e.g.:
- Established the Institute for Female Entrepreneurs
This institute provides capacity strengthening and coaching to female
(micro)entrepreneurs; organizes 6 marketing activities annually;
- Established the Uma Kraka Fund for micro entrepreneurs
- Established the J. Elsenhout Women's Documentation Center
- Established the I.Henar-Hewitt Bureau for Women's Rights
This Bureau is well known in the Surinamese Society for its legal counseling
and advice, media campaigns and mobile unit for legal information on civil
and women’s rights; lobby and advocacy for new legislation and/or adaptation
of laws/legislative products; prevention and elimination of sexual harassment
programme; the sexual harassment programme is being funded by the United
Nations Trust Fund for Violence against Women/UNTF/UNIFEM and was
selected as one of 18 projects from 1080 applicants
- Launched the Programme for Non-Traditional Female Skills to promote
women in technical professions and better economic positions
- Supervised the organization of six national Women Production Trade Fairs,
involving participants from the Caribbean and The Netherlands
- Supervised capacity development activities of 26 women's and community
based organizations as part of the Capacity Development for Women
Programme
- Launched the programme for economic and social empowerment of women
living in remote interior (rural area)of Suriname
- Launched the campaign for Cervix Cancer prevention in several communities,
in collaboration with the Family Planning Association and the Ministry of
Health
- Launched a vast multi-annual programme on ‘Water, Sanitation and Waste
Management” (See separate CV on Water and Sanitation)

Accommodating government’s social policies and programs, either through the NVB or directly:
• The NVB was frequently consulted by public bodies and ministries.
• The NVB was included in various national hearings (e.g. in connection with the preparation of the Long-range Development program).
• The NVB participated in the board and in the execution of Low Cost Shelter Program (Social Affairs/IDB)
• Was a Steering Committee Member for the Support for Sustainable Development of the Interior Programme (government), funded by Interamerican Development Bank): representing the Network of NGOs operating in the Interior

Trade Union and Private Sector
Positioning of the NVB to be recognized as a partner for special projects of the Trade Union movement and of the private sector:
• Successfully coaching one of the Trade Union Federations (C47) in establishing a women’s section. This same trade federation participated in the Advisory Body of the NVB for the Programme to promote women technical skills.
• Participates with Chamber and Commerce and Private Sector Employers Association (VSB) in programme ‘Business for All’ aimed at strengthening the capacities of 20 female entrepreneurs

The University of Suriname
Liaises through the NVB with the University of Suriname to work together in the following areas:
• Partnership agreement concerning the program on the interior
• Research for the benefit of several NVB programmes
