Akani simbine made up for the poor start and run in the heats when he won the first of three semi finals of the 100m going from gun to line in 10.05 seconds.
This left Justin Gatlin, who was booed by the crowd on introduction, in second in 10.08.

Having finished fourth and only making the semi final as the fastest loser, it was important for the South African to execute the semi final correctly prior to tonights final.
Yohan Blake won the 2nd semi in 10.04 while Christian Coleman from USA ran the fastest semi in 9.97, with a slow starting Bolt having to play catch up for 9.98 second spot to secure qualification.
