  • Lao Tzu ‘Lao Tzu, the "old boy", is the alleged founder of Taoism. Taoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy and way of life. Where Confucianism, another ancient Chinese line of thought, tries to arrange nature and keep social harmony by implementing strict guidelines and rituals, Taoism seeks to live more on the outskirts where things are indeterminate, and where one can "go with the flow". The Tao, or "the way", is natural order of things, and the idea is that as soon as one is properly aligned with the Tao, things get done without force--one becomes sensitive to the direction of nature and the demands of situations without needing to refer to a socially constructed set of rules. For the Taoist, nature is the ultimate teacher and so we should live in harmony with her. What is the Tao, you might be asking? Well: "The Tao which can be spoken is not the eternal Tao." Don't try to capture its essence in thought, just be it.’
