Believe it or not, it’s been over 80 episodes since our last Director Retrospective (we really need to do these more often). That last one was for Woody Allen on episode 94. When the idea came up/was rejuvenated to do another one, I had a very specific set of criteria I was looking for the director to fit, and Richard Linklater was one of the very few – if not the only one – that could have fit the bill.
I wanted someone with “indie” leanings, with a much smaller filmography than Woody Allen (difficult to discuss 20+ films at all…), who was capable of shuffling between smaller and larger films, was modern and/or still relevant, who was a good-to-great filmmaker (should kind of go without saying) and…probably more. Basically, it came down to the likes of Linklater, Guillermo del Toro, and Steven Soderbergh (and perhaps we’ll cover them later).
I’ll skip the bio I might normally give here since I give a detailed one on the show. Suffice to say that this is an Extended Play episode, stretching to over two hours. We decided to focus on 10 of his more prominent films:
* Slacker * Dazed and Confused * Before Sunrise* Waking Life * Tape * School of Rock * Before Sunset * A Scanner Darkly * Bernie* Before Midnight
