  • Kindling the Fire "How far is the Christian East sympathetic to a ‘charismatic’ understanding of the spiritual life? At first sight it might appear that there is but little affinity. Orthodoxy, it might be said, is liturgical and hierarchic, whereas Pentecostalism is grounded upon the free and spontaneous action of the Spirit; Orthodoxy appeals to Holy Tradition, whereas Pentecostalism assigns primacy to personal experience. Anyone, however, who searches more deeply will soon realize that stark contrasts of this kind are one-sided and misleading. In actual fact, many of the Greek Fathers insist with great emphasis upon the need for all baptized Christians to attain in their own personal experience a direct and conscious awareness of the Holy Spirit. No one can be a Christian at second-hand: such is the frequently repeated teaching of the Fathers. Holy Tradition does not signify merely the mechanical and exterior acceptance of truths formulated in the distant past, but it is in the words of the Russian theologian Vladimir Lossky – nothing else than ‘the life of the Holy Spirit in the Church2 here and now, at this present moment." +Kallistos Ware "A person who has within him the light of the most Holy Spirit, unable to endure it, falls prostrate upon the ground; and he cries out and shouts in terror and great fear, for he sees and experiences something that surpasses nature, thought and imagination. He becomes as one whose entrails have been set ablaze: devoured by fire and unable to bear the scorching flame, he is beside himself, and he cannot control himself at all. And though he sheds unceasing tears that bring him some relief, the fire of his longing is kindled to yet fiercer flames. Then he weeps more abundantly and, washed by the flood of his tears, he shines as lightning with an- ever-increasing brilliance. When he is entirely aflame and becomes as light, then is fulfilled the saying, ‘God is joined in unity with gods and is known by them. 40" St.Symeon the New Theologian

  • Its Just Politics
Its Just Politics We answer to God for how we respect and treat governmental authorities.  However, the authorities also have to answer to God for how they govern. Paul calls them "diakonos".  I pray all governmental authorities realize that the position they hold came from God and that they must rule as servants (diakonos), for they are directly accountable to Him in how they govern.  The excuse of "Its just politics" to just do the people any type of way, doesn't fly in the face of God.

  • God the Righteous Judge
God the Righteous Judge We cant truly see another person's thinking, emotions, and motives, and we are thankful to God that we cant. Jeremiah 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind,[b] to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

  • The Mystery of Wisdom is Revealed
The Mystery of Wisdom is Revealed The dictionary defines wisdom as being the following: "the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise. the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment: "some questioned the wisdom of building the dam so close to an active volcano" the body of knowledge and principles that develops within a specified society or period:" The problem with this is, who decides the quality of the knowledge?  What society decides what principles are sound?  Who determines when someone has good judgement? Paul suggest to us that wisdom is indeed not any of these things, but rather, something else, someone else. Listen and find out WHO wisdom is.

  • Transformed to Die
Transformed to Die Luke 9:28-36 28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. 32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. 36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

  • Back to School - Being Led of the Holy Spirit Part 3
Back to School - Being Led of the Holy Spirit Part 3 Psalms 23:6 "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." How can making a mistake be a good thing? Psalms 23 talks about God leading us, but what is God's response when we don't follow Him? The word "Follow" here in our verse, some scholars suggest, perhaps may be too passive when compared to the original meaning. In the TWOT it seems to have a more aggressive meaning, to "pursue and run after". It is used in the scriptures also to denote the aggressiveness that pharaoh had chasing the Hebrews after they left. Perhaps it should remind you of how when a child is lost and the alarm and pursuit, the amber alerts that happen to find the lost child. Even when we don't follow the leading of the Spirit of God, his goodness and mercy is there "all the days of my life" pursuing after me with such aggression. He is so aggressive about His mercy and goodness that He came down Himself and became incarnate and dwelt among men, and died (no greater love than this...)! So when you mess up, and don't follow the Spirit of God, now you get a chance to know the depths of His goodness and mercy. God is pursuing you, just as much, if not more, than you may be pursuing Him.
