Solfeggio is a music education method used to teach pitch, and sight singing. Guido of Arezzo (991/992 – after 1033) is credited with developing our current techniques for teaching, such as staff notation and the Solfeggio "ut–re–mi–fa–so–la" ( ♪ do–re–mi–fa–so–la) mnemonic, popularized in modern times by The Kodály Method taught in schools. The 6 note ascending scale’s names were taken from the first verse of the Latin hymn Ut queant laxis (To Be Loosened,) where the syllables fall on their corresponding scale degree:
