Equivalent for he Finnish word 'kokonaisuus' in English?Recorded 2015-07-25
The word 'kokonaisuus' is a great word and concept known in the Finnish language and intellectual culture. It implies a wholeness, a whole, a totality in general terms, and it is used quite frequently. In English it seems that one usually specifies the context in the wording that expresses the context, and a proper generic term such as 'kokonaisuus' is missing. One doesn't really use the terms 'whole' or 'totality' to express such concept, as far as I have understood. The term 'context' could be used in my opinion for instance to point to a field of information, or to the set of sub-elements under an main element, but the main element itself would not be included in that set, as it would be in 'kokonaisuus'. 'Set', on the other hand, implies a group of some specific category of things, whereas in 'kokonaisuus', the elements can be of any category.

Here I discuss 'hacking' as it points to utilizing technology in the way it was not intended, in the context of solving problems in the domain of implementation of software or technology.
