In 1938, Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater actors aired a novel adaptation known as "War of the Worlds" the night before Halloween. The broadcast created panic around America because most listeners missed the announcement at the beginning of the show that it was a play. Millions believed the world was under attack by aliens and sheer hysteria broke out.
