Who says romance with a song in the background is only for humans acting on screen? Director K.Natraj took a step of depicting the romance between 2 dogs with an awesome, classic tune of Ilayaraja sung for the Tamil film "Selvi" released in 1985 by SPB and S.Janaki. With generic lyrics by Kavignar Vaali and a melodious and groovy composition by the maestro, this song rode the popularity charts high (reported by sources from back then). Today, the video looks a tad bit shoddy and contrived due to some mindless costuming of the dogs. However, the magic of Ilayaraja's music fills us with the same enchantment and lilt, as it did several years ago. One of my all-time favorites of Raja sir...presented in my voice (in both leads and chorus portions) for your listening, dear friends. The song needed a husky, subdued approach with subtle modulations (impeccably done by SPB sir and Janaki amma). One special learning for me was to never under-estimate chorus work. The precision, loudness, extent of hold, consistent repeatability and swerve of voice that a chorus section needs can never be simplified. Particularly, the rejoin points with the interludes after the section...very demanding on a perfect blend with unison. Having had the opportunity of singing chorus for Raja sir during my school days(as a part of the choir), I could recall pleasant and demanding memories of rehearsals and takes back then.
Lyrics with rough translation below:
iLamandhu palakanavu vizhigalilE vazhigiradhE
youth and its variety of dreams are sparkling in the eyes
siRuvayadhu pudhu uRavu aruginilE varugiRadhE
in this young age, a new relationship is approaching nearby
indha manadhukkum vayadhukkum sugam ennavO
what joy abounds the age and heart
ingu puriyattum puriyattumE
let that be understood here
adhu iravukkum pagalukkum podhuvallavO
that is common to day and night
indru theriyattum theriyattumE
let it be evident today
koDiyiDai naaNathil neLigiradhO kanigaLin baarathil vaLaigiRadhO
Is the climber-like waist swaying in shyness and bending being unable to bear the weight of the fruits?
manamoru mohathil vizhugiRadhO maruviDum aasaigaL varugiRadhO
Is the heart falling in attraction with desires dawning with caress
virall pattu iLa moTTu viriyattumE vetkam vilagattum vilagattumE
as the fingers touch, let the bud flower and lose its shyness
iru kaNNum iru kaiyyum iLa nenjamum anbai ezhudhattum ezhudhattumE
let the two eyes and hands write the story of love from the heart
pudhu malarai mudhal mudhalAi thoDuvadhinAl suDugiRadhu
as the new flower is touched for the first time, it feels hot..
azhagiya vAsalgaL thiRandhiDumO adhiloru aanandham piRandhiDumO
will the beautiful entrances open and lead to happiness?
thalayanai vEdhangaL viLaNgiDumO thoDangiya rAgangaL thoDarndhiDumO
will the nuptial secrets be understood and the joyful tunes continue?
iLamaikkuL yezhuginDRa yezhil vaNnamE ingu malarattum malarattumE
let the colors of youth blossom
thamaikkul yezhuginDra thuyar veLLamE indRu vaDiyattum vaDiyattumE
let the pain of separation/lonliness drain away
pudhu ulagam adhisayamAi vizhigaLilE viRigiRadhu
a new world of wonder opens before the eyes...
