Tin Angel Records proudly presents their first ever Cassette Store Day release, featuring two sides of glorious noise from two of America’s best kept secrets.
Zelienople exist as a unique entry in the pantheon of Chicago musicians pushing the boundaries of genre. The quartet takes basic song-structures and textural palates of folk and rock and infuses them with the spontaneous fluidity of jazz and the shimmering haze of ambient music, emphasizing subtle facets of each genre to create their own individual style. “Inside Your Garden At Nightâ€, originally recorded to soundtrack a photography exhibition, pushes the musical boat out into deep waters, with a pulsing drone acting as an anchor whilst disembodied vocal samples, field recordings of bird song and gentle bursts of static tug at the listener’s sleeve as they journey through the darkness. It is a compelling and meditative experience, with Matt Christensen, Brian Harding and Mike Weis at the peak of their instrumental powers.
Opal Onyx are a Brooklyn-based band who released their debut album “Delta Sands†on Tin Angel Records to wide acclaim. Their side is the seedy underbelly of a concrete jungle to Zelienople’s night amongst the leaves. “Bullets†opens with ambient guitar on top of a crackly beat as Sarah Nowicki’s vocal hovers over the horrors below. New member Heidi Sabertooth makes her recording bow on the second song “Lucidâ€, adding an array of electronic flourishes as the tension in Side B’s first act spills over in waves of synthesizer and Matthew Robinson’s roaring cello. The world that Opal Onyx makes is one usually only experienced in a brief and fleeting encounter – after 14 minutes in this maelstrom, the experience is wholly memorable.
