+++ Title: "The Problem With the Watchman, Watchtower and the Enquirer"
+++ Speaker: Steve Wilber
+++ Venue: Pinecrest Summer Bible Conference
+++ Date: July 15, 1987

---4 minutes - He describes his own conversion and early Christian experience.

---6 min - He's building upon the previous night's message regarding David's anointing by Samuel.

---10 - The divine "SHALL": Because I live, ye SHALL live also!

---11 - Man's struggle against death. Even when he passes a dead animal on the highway, he has learned to pray and talk to God about it. Jesus said that even a sparrow shall not fall without the Father taking notice of it. God almighty comes to officiate at the death of little animals and birds. Steve talks of his mother's struggle with tuberculosis, until the Holy Ghost "fell upon her like cool rain and healed her".

---18 - At the time this message was recorded in 1987, great scandal had wracked the pulpit ministry, and the public had begun to "tune out" preachers. It was similar in the first century when John the Baptist could not be established in his prophetic office by talking ...not by preaching, not by teaching, not by prophetic discourse alone. There had been so many false prophets that it took concrete deeds before the people would listen.

---20 - As certain phony elements pass off the scene, we say Amen to that. We also say amen to the Lord as He comes to lead us into greater truth than we have known.

---23 - In addition to being a prophet, Samuel was also a watchman. Steve recalls being a sort of watchman over his family's garden when he was a boy.

---25 - Isaiah 62:6 - These watchmen are NOT mainly oriented toward looking for the ENEMY, but are instead looking toward the LORD. "...ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence".

---31 - We don't "have" the truth, but - like John the Baptist - we simply "bear witness" to the truth. We can travel light.

---33 - Is. 21:6. "...Go set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth." God has a vision for you. An authentic spirtual vision with SUBSTANCE. It will be yours, and it will be very very satisfying.

---35 - Steve was frustrated in his own personal quest for vision ...but that changed.

---37 - The problem with the watchtower: Is there anybody in the watchtower? A public ministry in the pulpit should be like the tip of an iceberg, resting upon a vast hidden life with the Lord and listening to Him.

---44 - The problem of the watchman himself. "His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant." Is. 56:10-12. There is a lifestyle which is incompatible with ministry. Jesus said in John 4, "...I have meat to eat that ye know not of." Isaiah compares Israel's watchmen to someone who talks in their sleep (nonsensical muttering).

---58 - The problem with the Enquirer. "I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved." Hab. 2:1. We have to be ready to receive a tough Word. The following verse: "And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." The inquirer is the runner, and we owe it to him to give him a clear word.

---64 - Jesus Christ is the great Watchman, and all of the watchtowers of history are garthered up in the cross of Calvary. He mounted that watchtower decisively. All other watchtowers had yielded provisional, temporary answers.

---65 - Watchman, what of the night? "Well I have met the night personally and I have CONQUERED the night!" Glory be to God!! -And if you can receive it, you can begin to ANNOUNCE the gospel message, and you can TURN THE NIGHT BACK anytime you will to. Jesus Christ did it once for all.

---68 - And this man Jesus ascends to heaven in a glorified state, and lo and behold, he's praying up in heaven's watchtower. If you will seek Him with all your heart he'll return an answer of such simple clarity, it will astonish you.

---69 - Jesus always gave the true answer from the vantage point of his watchtower (the cross). God, in Jesus Christ, became His own prophet and told the absolute truth about Himself.
