His Name is the Holy Spirit: The Life-Producer 2 Peter
1.Read 2 Peter 1:3, 19-21; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17. Did God breathe something INTO the Scriptures and things men wrote down or did He breathe OUT the Scriptures? Is the word “inspiration” a bit misleading? Why are the words “spiring” or “spiration” more accurate, since the Scripture is not breathed into by God and it is not the product of God inbreathing into its human authors; but it is breathed out by God. It is the product of the creative breath of God. Discuss.
2.Though we do not know exactly how God operated in producing the Scripture, 2 Peter 1:21 does give us some information about the process regarding the OT prophets. Scripture is the product of a specifically Divine operation. What comes to mind when you think of someone being “borne along” by the Holy Spirit? Compare it to what you might know about sails in a strong wind and sailing. Why do you think theologians talk about “the superintending influence of the Holy Spirit”?
3.Was the process of “spiration” automatic handwriting? If not, what does that mean when God used various personalities, language skills, and acted sometimes contrary to a man’s natural desire? (See Jeremiah 1:6; Jeremiah 20:9, e.g.)
2.Give reasons for why it is important to hold to the inspiration and inerrancy of the autographs (original documents) of Scripture. Look up 1 Thess. 2:13. Consider the import if the Scriptures in their autographs do NOT contain the very words of God. How close can we get to the Truth?
3.Read 2 Peter 3:15, 16. What do you find revealed here?
4. The distinct experience of the Spirit’s immediate inspiration, or spiration, gives way to the Spirit’s illumination, working by and with the written word. Why do you think the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit is necessary to a saving understanding of the Word of God? How and/or in what ways has the Holy Spirit worked by and with the Word of God in your life?
5. The Spirit is The Life-Producer (John 6:63). He creates. He produced through a process called spiration the written Word. He regenerates and gives life to those given to Jesus by the Father such that these repent of their sins and turn in faith to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, believing Jesus. By His illuminating work, He reveals the truth of Scripture, the Word of God, in our lives. Discuss. What comes to your mind when you think of the Holy Spirit as “The Life-Producer”?
6. Look up John 5:39; James 1:5; 2 Peter 1:10-12, 20, 21; John 15:26; John 16:12-15. What would happen if you just believed in Jesus, believed Jesus, and sought to believe what Jesus believes? What might you ask God? What help might the Holy Spirit give you in revealing Truth to you? Would that be consistent with His nature? Why or why not?
