The This World programme by investigative reporter Darragh McIntyre claimed that the Cardinal was sent to investigate allegations against the paedophile priest in 1975 - rather than just being a note taker in the investigation as had previously been claimed. The programmes said that information about Father Smiths abuse was passed on to the Cardinal - but when This World spoke to all of the children who one of the victims, Brendan Boland, had identified, they all told the programme that to the best of their knowledge none of their parents or families were warned in anyway about Brendan Smyth.
In 2010, when Cardinal Bradys involvement in the affair was first revealed, he said that if he thought his failure to act led to children being abused, then he would resign.
