The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a conventional novel. The principle character, Hester, is labeled as an adulterer in 17th century Boston, because her spouse has failed to arrive to Boston, however Hester has a young daughter known as Pearl. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" across her chest, and is actually shunned by the rest of the people. Secretly, Hester's spouse is in disguise as Mr. Chillingworth and is determined on getting revenge for Hester's betrayal. Once he discovers the fact that the minister Mr. Dimmesdale is Pearl's dad, Chillingworth does his best to increase the stress and self-hating of Mr. Dimmesdale.
