SERBIAN CHURCH CHORAL SOCIETY of PANCHEVO
The oldest church choral society among the Serbs began its activities on Christmas Day of the year 1838, when the mixed-choir chanting resounded for the first time from the choral gallery of the cathedral dome of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God in Panchevo. The historical significance of the choir is in the fact that by its foundation, the mixed-choir chanting is in the liturgical rite despite the ban by the Synod of the Constantinople Patriarchate and the patriarch Antym who issued a “district epistle” on that subject, in 1846.
The Choir was founded and led by the local citizen Pavle Radivojevic, who, after completing his studies in Russia, brought to his hometown the first scores for the choir. When the ambitious and educated Nikola Djurkovic became a conductor, he had support of the then archpriest and the famos Serbian poet Vasa Zivkovic. The Choir was at that time expanded. That was the time when Djurkovic wrote his first liturgy.
The Choral Society expanded its activities – in addition to singing in the church, it organized concerts of spiritual and secular music, balls as well as appearances woth the just founded Panchevo’s theatrical company. Unfortunately, in the year of 1852, after the introduction of Bach’s absolutism, these activities ceased and Djurkovic leaves Panchevo.
The name of the composer and conductor, Kornelije Stankovic (1831-1865), one of the most important Serbian composers of that time, is also connected with the history of the Serbian Church Choral Society of Panchevo. Stankovic’s first God’s Mass (“Bozenstvena liturgija”) was just dedicated to the choir of Panchevo.
Davorin Jenko, a Slovenian by origin, came to Pancevo in 1863 and as a conductor, thanks to his connections from Vienna, he found his way easily in the new environment. In addition to compositions with religious content, he composes a number of scores on the verses of Serbian poets. After two years of productive work, he moved, as a successor of Kornelije Stankovic, to the fraternal First Choral Society of Belgrade. In the choir of Panchevo, conductors change one after another – there came Slavoljub Lzicar, Lazar Buta, Czechs Vaclav Horejsek and Josip Ce. Through joint work and cooperation of the choirs, cultural bonds with Czech people have been created.

PANCEVACKO SRPSKO CRKVENO PEVACKO DRUSTVO
Save treceg reda (1938) Orden Sv. Save drugog reda (1988), Kralj petar II podario je zastavu i primio Svoje Visoko Kumstvo pri njenom osvecenju i tako postao Visoki pokrovitelj Pancevackog srpskog crkvenog pevackog drustva. Na stogodisnjicu drustva, 1938. godine, clan i sekretar Hora i poznati istoricar Mihovil Tomandl objavio je "Spomenicu PSCPD"- iscrpnu istoriju Pancevackog srpskog crkvenog pevackog drustva. Drustvo je 1923. postalo clan Juznoslovenskog pevackog saveza, ucestvovalo je na svecanosti prilikom prenosa posmrtnih ostataka pokojnog Stevana Mokranjca i priredjuje 30. duhovni koncert povodom prenosa posmrtnih ostataka Vladike Rada- Petra II Petrovica Njegosa sa Cetinja na Lovcen...
